'The Commuter' 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review: All Aboard for Liam Neeson's Latest Action-Thriller
April 17, 2018Ben MK
FEATURE: As unlikely an action star as he was at the outset, there's no doubt that Liam Neeson's status as one of the genre's most bankable stars is safe and secure, even though the actor has already surpassed retirement age. Now, in his fourth collaboration with director Jaume Collet-Serra, Neeson delivers one of his most entertaining and over-the-top popcorn movies yet. Synopsis: In this action-packed thriller, Liam Neeson is Michael, an insurance salesman, whose daily commute home quickly becomes anything but routine. After being confronted by a mysterious stranger (Vera Farmiga), Michael is blackmailed into finding the identity of a passenger on his train before the last stop. As he works against the clock to solve the puzzle, Michael is unwittingly caught up in a criminal conspiracy that carries life and death stakes for himself and his fellow passengers. The vast majority of the movie takes place in the confined spaces of the train's cars, and though that places a definite limitation on the visuals, this 2160p image manages to make do quite well, with the only downside being strong black levels that tend to drown out the detail in areas such as the creases of Michael's dark suit. Otherwise, the accompanying Dolby Atmos sound mix allows fist fights, gunshots and the tension-building score to make an impact, with the standout being an out-of-control train barreling down the tracks and then derailing spectacularly. EXTRAS: VVS Films' two-disc 4K release includes a Blu-ray copy of the film, as well as the following extras:
