‘Peter Rabbit’ Blu-ray Review: The Beloved Children’s Classic is Reimagined for Contemporary Audiences
May 21, 2018Ben MK
FEATURE: An agreeably charming and modern update to author Beatrix Potter's classic series of children's books, Peter Rabbit is a movie that both adult audiences and younger viewers will find it easy to take a shining to. In it, James Corden voices the titular bunny rabbit (just don't refer to him as a rodent), who calls the quaint English countryside town of Windermere home sweet burrow, along with his three sisters, Cotton-Tail (Daisy Ridley), Mopsy (Elizabeth Debicki) and Flopsy (Margot Robbie), and his cousin Benjamin (Colin Moody). Always at odds with the mean-spirited Mr. McGregor (Sam Neill), who despises the local wildlife for foraging in his vegetable garden, Peter has made it his mission in life to be the thorn in McGregor's side. But when the old man drops dead from a heart attack, Peter finds a new arch nemesis to contend with — McGregor's great-nephew, Thomas (Domhnall Gleeson), who ends up falling for Peter's kindhearted neighbor, a local artist named Bea (Rose Byrne). From the rabbits' soft fur and the fabric texture of their tiny jackets, to the picturesque green landscape of Windermere and the hustle and bustle of the streets of London, image detail is outstanding throughout and color saturation is top-notch. Add to that the sounds of leaves rustling in the breeze, chirping birds and all manner of cartoonish chaos, not to mention the upbeat rhythms of songs like Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still" and The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)," and this technical presentation is just as charming as the movie itself.
