Canadian Film Fest Review: ‘Wolves Unleashed: Against All Odds’

March 21, 2019Britany Murphy

The next film in a series written and directed by renowned animal trainer Andrew Simpson, Wolves Unleashed: Against All Odds shows the fragility and heart of a pack of Mongolian wolves in China.

The documentary begins with Simpson and his team raising the wolves as pups and eventually training them as they grow into adolescence. Of course, it's not an easy road, neither for the wolves nor their trainers, and the film does an excellent job in demonstrating this fact. Yes, the trainers are working with wolves, however Simpson and his fellow trainers never try to quell the animals' natural instincts in any way. Even after forming a bond with one of the wolves in particular, Simpson respects the fact that they do not want to be touched by him or the other trainers.

From near death experiences to a wolf pup born by c-section, Wolves Unleashed is a heartfelt documentary about the ups and downs experienced by the wolves and Simpson's training team. But above all, it gives a look into the lives of one of the world's most misunderstood creatures.

Wolves Unleashed: Against All Odds screens Thursday, March 21st at the Canadian Film Fest. Its runtime is 1 hr. 26 min.
