The world of cinema is vast and full of larger-than-life characters. And when it comes to film franchises, none has more larger-than-life characters than the Fast & Furious series. Enter Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, a spin-off/sequel that pairs two of the franchise's more memorable personalities, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's DSS agent Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham's criminal-turned-spy Deckard Shaw, as they must team up to stop a deadly super-virus from falling into the hands of a vicious opponent named Brixton (Idris Elba) — a former cohort of Deckard's who's now as much machine as he is man. A soldier for the shadowy, hi-tech organization Etheon, Brixton has his sights set on global anarchy. But if he and his team are to achieve their goal of unleashing the virus upon the planet's population, he must first extract it from the bloodstream of Deckard's MI6 agent sister Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), who's injected herself with the virus in an attempt to save millions from an untimely demise. Can she, her brother and his frenemy save the world? To answer that question, director David Leitch takes viewers from London to Los Angeles and Moscow to Samoa, as Hobbs and Shaw must not only set aside their own personal differences with one another, but must also make amends with the estranged family members they've wronged. Of course, there's also no shortage of explosions, over-the-top vehicle chases and hand-to-hand combat to speed the journey onward, not to mention some surprise cameos from two of Leitch's Deadpool 2 stars and one of Johnson's Jumanji co-stars along the way. It all adds up to a movie that perfectly fits the summer blockbuster mold. In other words, if you like your action fast and furious and your Fast & Furious films full of action and comedy, then Hobbs & Shaw does not disappoint. And that's good news for moviegoers, because the series shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw releases August 2nd, 2019 from Universal Pictures. The film has an MPAA rating of PG-13 for prolonged sequences of action and violence, suggestive material and some strong language. Its runtime is 2 hrs. 15 min. |
